New Puppy Checklist
Puppies require a lot of care and attention. It’s best to make a shopping list and head to the pet store before you bring your new puppy home. We also recommend puppy proofing your home to keep him/her from getting into something harmful (chemicals, electrical cords, dangerous plants, etc.).
Here are some basics you’ll need for your new puppy:
-
Food designed specifically for large breed puppies. We recommend Victor
-
Treats for training (we prefer to use cooked chicken breast cut into small cubes)
-
Food and water dishes
-
Crate small (to be replaced by a bigger one as he/she grows) or large with divider.
-
Puppy potty training pads (with supervision, as puppies like to chew these up!)
-
Bedding (at least 2 sets to have one while the other is in the wash)
-
Doggie gate(s)
-
Soft, adjustable collar (and new ones as he/she grows)
-
At least one 4 to 6 foot leash, leather or webbing (an additional longer lead for training; esp. the "come" command)
-
At least 5 or 6 SAFE toys (the more the better; toys can be rotated)
-
Chewy things. Trachea, hooves, pig ears, bully sticks. USA MADE!
-
NO RAWHIDE! NO NYLA BONE!
-
A soft-bristle brush and short pin brush for grooming
-
Shampoo & Conditioner ~ look for gentle and moisturizing
-
Good-quality dog nail trimmer or electric dremel with diamond tip
-
Dog toothbrush and toothpaste
